Understanding Acupuncture for Pain Relief in Our Community

Acupuncture involves inserting very fine needles into specific points on the body. These points, known as acupoints, are believed to stimulate the body’s natural healing processes. From a Western medical perspective, acupuncture is thought to influence the nervous system, release endorphins (the body’s natural painkillers), and reduce inflammation. The goal is to restore balance and promote the body’s innate ability to heal itself, making acupuncture for pain relief Lower Plenty a highly sought-after solution for local residents.

What to Bring to Your First Appointment

To help your first visit run smoothly, please arrive a few minutes early and bring any relevant medical records, recent imaging or specialist referral letters you may have on hand. Loose, comfortable clothing is recommended, as this makes it easier for your practitioner to access the areas being treated during your session. If you are a member of a private health fund, please bring your membership card, as HICAPS facilities are available on site, allowing eligible rebates to be processed immediately at the time of payment rather than requiring a separate claim later on. New patients are also encouraged to bring a list of current medications and any questions they would like to raise during the consultation.

Sessions typically run for around 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the complexity of your presentation and the treatment plan your practitioner recommends for your care. Many patients find it helpful to keep a simple diary of their symptoms between visits, noting any changes in comfort levels, sleep quality or daily function, as this information helps your practitioner fine-tune your ongoing plan. Our friendly reception team is always happy to answer questions about session length, expected costs or health fund coverage before you book, so please do not hesitate to call the clinic if you would like more information. We aim to make every visit to our Lower Plenty clinic as comfortable and straightforward as possible, from your very first booking through to your ongoing reviews.

A Session with Dr Catherine, Step by Step

If you are new to acupuncture, knowing how a session runs can make the first visit feel much easier. Dr Catherine Farchione works within a Chinese medicine framework, so your appointment involves more than the needles themselves.

1. Conversation and Health History

Catherine asks about the reason for your visit, your general health, sleep, digestion, energy, stress levels and, where relevant, your menstrual cycle or pregnancy. She will also ask about medications, supplements and any care you are receiving from your GP or specialist.

2. Traditional Observations

Chinese medicine practitioners often look at the tongue and feel the pulse at the wrist. These observations form part of how she organises her thinking about your care in a traditional framework.

3. Explaining the Plan

Before any needling begins, Catherine explains what she suggests, where the needles are likely to go, and what you might feel. You can ask questions or decline any part of the treatment.

4. The Needling

Very fine, sterile, single-use needles are placed at selected points. You usually rest quietly on the treatment table while they stay in place, often for around 20–30 minutes, though this varies.

5. Finishing Up

Needles are removed and disposed of safely. Catherine may offer simple diet, lifestyle or self-care suggestions, and talk with you about whether further visits make sense.

How the Needling Works, in Plain English

Traditional Chinese medicine describes health in terms of balance and the flow of energy, often called "qi", through pathways in the body. Needling at chosen points is one of the ways this tradition aims to restore balance.

From a modern perspective, researchers are still studying how and when needling may help, and the evidence varies a great deal between conditions. We prefer to be honest about that. What we can say is that many people use this kind of treatment as part of a broader approach to wellbeing, and many describe the sessions as calming and relaxing.

Needling is not a substitute for medical diagnosis or care. It is best seen as something that can sit alongside the advice of your GP or specialist.

Who May Choose This Treatment

People come to see Catherine for many different reasons. Many people use this kind of care for:

  • Support with stress, tension and feeling run down.
  • General wellbeing and relaxation alongside a busy life.
  • Muscle and joint discomfort, often alongside other hands-on care.
  • Support during women's health stages, including around pregnancy, as one part of their overall care.
  • Complementary support while going through fertility care with a medical team.

If you have a diagnosed condition, are pregnant, or are undergoing fertility treatment, please discuss your plans with your GP or specialist and keep them informed. Catherine is happy to work alongside your medical team and does not replace their care.

Preparing for Your Visit

  • Eat a light meal an hour or two beforehand. Coming in very hungry can make some people feel light-headed.
  • Wear loose clothing that can be rolled up past the knees and elbows.
  • Bring a list of medications, supplements and herbs you take, plus any relevant test results.
  • Tell us if you are pregnant, take blood thinners, have a bleeding disorder, a pacemaker, or feel uneasy about needles.
  • Allow a little extra time on your first visit for the health history.
  • Bring your health fund card if you want to claim through HICAPS.

Is Acupuncture Safe, and What Might You Feel?

When performed by a registered practitioner using sterile single-use needles, needling is generally considered low risk. Chinese medicine practitioners in Australia are registered with the Chinese Medicine Board through AHPRA, and you can check a practitioner's registration before you book.

Common sensations include a brief prick, a dull ache, warmth or heaviness around the point. Afterwards, some people notice:

  • Minor bruising or a small spot of bleeding at a needle site.
  • Feeling relaxed, sleepy or occasionally a little light-headed.
  • Mild tenderness that usually settles within a day.

If anything feels uncomfortable during the session, tell Catherine straight away and she can adjust or remove a needle.

How It Complements Other Services at Bodyline

Because Bodyline Health is a multidisciplinary clinic, Chinese medicine care can be combined with other services under the same roof when that suits you:

  • Chinese herbal medicine and dietary advice with Catherine.
  • Chiropractic with Dr Phil Mifsud for spine and joint care.
  • Remedial massage or myotherapy for soft tissue work.
  • Naturopathy, nutrition and dietetics, and counselling with our mental wellness therapist.
  • An onsite Austin Pathology collection centre if your GP has requested blood tests.

Combining services is always your choice. Practitioners will only suggest it when they think it may genuinely be useful.

When to See a GP or Seek Urgent Care

Needling is not appropriate as a first response to some symptoms. See your GP promptly if you have:

  • Unexplained weight loss, ongoing fever or night sweats.
  • New or unusual bleeding, including between periods or during pregnancy.
  • Pain that is severe, getting steadily worse, or wakes you at night.
  • Low mood that is not lifting. If you have thoughts of harming yourself, call Lifeline on 13 11 14 or 000 in an emergency.

Call 000 for chest pain, difficulty breathing, sudden weakness on one side of the body, or a sudden severe headache. For general health information, healthdirect is a reliable starting point. If anything suggests you need medical care, Catherine will tell you and recommend you see your GP.

Practical Self-Care After Treatment

  • Take it easy for the rest of the day and avoid very strenuous exercise straight away.
  • Drink water and eat regular, nourishing meals.
  • Avoid alcohol immediately after your session.
  • Notice how you feel over the next few days, and share that at your next visit.
  • Keep any self-care suggestions simple and realistic so they fit into your week.
