First chiropractic appointment – quick answer: At your first chiropractic appointment at Bodyline Health, Dr Phil talks with you about your symptoms, health history and goals, then carries out a physical examination of how you move. X-rays are only arranged if they are clinically indicated. He explains what he thinks is going on and your options, and if chiropractic care suits you, treatment may start the same day. You don’t need a referral, and you can claim on the spot with HICAPS.

Booking a chiropractor for the first time can feel a bit unknown. This guide walks you through a first chiropractic appointment at Bodyline Health, 17 Main Road, Lower Plenty, from what to bring to what happens afterwards, so you know exactly what to expect.

Before your first chiropractic appointment

  • Book online or call (03) 9017 4784. No referral is needed.
  • Bring your health fund card if you have extras cover, so you can claim with HICAPS.
  • Bring any scans or reports you already have, such as X-rays, MRI or ultrasound reports, and a list of any medications.
  • Wear comfortable clothing you can move in.
  • Arrive a few minutes early. There is free parking on site and the clinic is fully accessible.

What happens during the appointment?

1. A conversation about you

Dr Phil asks about your symptoms, when they started, what makes them better or worse, your general health, past injuries, medications and what you’d like to get back to doing.

2. A physical examination

He looks at your posture and how you move, and may do orthopaedic and neurological tests, such as checking reflexes, strength and sensation. This helps work out where the problem is coming from and whether chiropractic care is suitable.

3. X-rays only if they’re needed

X-rays are only taken when they’re clinically indicated, based on your history and examination. If you need one, Bodyline Health has onsite digital X-ray. If you already have recent X-rays or scans, bring them along. See X-ray at Bodyline Health.

4. An explanation and a plan

Dr Phil explains what he has found in plain language, talks through your options, including any risks, and asks for your consent before any treatment. If something needs medical attention, he will refer you to your GP.

5. Treatment, if it suits you

If chiropractic care is appropriate, treatment may begin at your first visit. Depending on what you need, it may include gentle spinal manipulation or mobilisation, soft-tissue work, and advice and exercises you can do at home. Dr Phil is also an exercise physiologist, so there is a strong focus on keeping you moving between visits. You can ask questions or decline any technique at any time.

How much does a first chiropractic appointment cost?

An initial chiropractic consultation at Bodyline Health is $134 and standard follow-up visits are $89. Until 31 December 2026, new patients can book an initial consult with Dr Phil for $99 via the special button on our homepage. X-rays only if clinically indicated. Many private health funds include chiropractic in extras cover, and HICAPS lets you claim on the spot. See payments and funding for more.

After your first visit

Some people feel a little sore, stiff or tired for a day or two after treatment. This usually settles on its own. Keep gently active, follow any exercises you were given, and call us if anything worries you or doesn’t settle. Dr Phil will talk with you about whether follow-up visits would help and review your plan as you go.

When to see your GP instead

See your GP or call 000 if you have pain after a significant fall or accident, a sudden severe headache unlike any before, fever or unexplained weight loss, numbness in the groin area, new bladder or bowel problems, or weakness that is getting worse.

First chiropractic appointment: common questions

How long does a first chiropractic appointment take?

Your first appointment is longer than a standard follow-up visit, because it includes a full history and examination before any treatment. Allow a little extra time and arrive a few minutes early.

Do I need a referral for my first chiropractic appointment?

No. You can book directly with Bodyline Health in Lower Plenty. You don’t need a GP referral for a private appointment.

Will I need an X-ray at my first visit?

Not always. X-rays are only taken when they are clinically indicated, for example after an injury or when your history or examination suggests they are needed. Bodyline Health has onsite digital X-ray. If you already have X-rays or scans, bring them with you.

Will I be treated at my first appointment?

If the assessment shows chiropractic care is suitable, treatment may begin at the first visit. If it isn’t suitable, or something needs medical review, Dr Phil will explain why and refer you to your GP.

What should I wear to my first chiropractic appointment?

Wear comfortable clothing you can move in, such as trousers or shorts and a top that lets you bend and twist easily.
