What are the common side effects?
Some people notice mild soreness, stiffness, headache or tiredness after treatment. These usually ease within 24–48 hours. Tell your chiropractor if anything worries you or doesn’t settle.
Are there serious risks?
Serious complications after spinal manipulation, particularly of the neck, have been reported but are rare. This is one reason a thorough assessment matters, and why manipulation is only one of several options. Gentler techniques, mobilisation, soft-tissue work and exercise can be used instead.
Who shouldn’t have spinal manipulation?
Manipulation may not be suitable if you have, or are being investigated for, conditions such as osteoporosis or other bone weakness, a recent fracture, spinal cord or nerve compression, inflammatory joint conditions affecting the neck, some blood vessel conditions, bleeding disorders or blood-thinning medication, or cancer affecting the spine. Always tell your practitioner about your medical history and medications.
What we check first
At your first visit Dr Phil will:
- Ask about your symptoms, health history, medications and goals
- Carry out a physical and neurological assessment
- Look for signs that need a GP or medical review
- Arrange onsite X-rays only if clinically indicated
- Explain the options, including risks, and ask for your consent before treatment
You can ask questions or decline any technique at any time. Read more about what happens at your first chiropractic appointment.
How we keep care safe at Bodyline Health
If you’re wondering “is chiropractic safe for me?”, the honest answer depends on your health history, your symptoms and the type of treatment. That’s why Dr Phil screens every new patient before treatment, explains the options in plain language and asks for your consent. You can choose gentler techniques such as mobilisation, soft-tissue work and exercise instead of manipulation, and you can stop or change treatment at any time. If anything in your history suggests another approach or a medical review is needed, you’ll be referred to your GP. Is chiropractic safe for everyone? No health care suits everyone, which is why the assessment comes first.
