What is remedial massage therapy?

Remedial massage therapy is a complementary therapy used for the location and treatment of damage in the muscles, tendons, ligaments and connective tissues of the body to aid in pain management and speeding up the body’s own healing process. Remedial massage tracks the origin of the pain to treat both the cause and provide relief for causal pain in other parts of the body. Remedial massage is performed by a trained remedial massage therapist and is categorised as a therapeutic or healing massage.

Who needs remedial massage?

Remedial massage is a targeted massage therapy that will benefit those who experience chronic pain or injuries that require advanced treatment. This massage therapy is a popular treatment in sports medicine and the relief of muscular pain in the back, neck and shoulders caused by stress, bad posture and long hours of sitting at a desk.

How does remedial massage work?

We use various techniques to locate the cause of the pain, treat injured muscles and increase range of motion. Remedial massage stimulates blood supply and oxygen to improve joint mobility while balancing muscles and tendons to restore correct bone positions and fast-track healing. By stabilising damaged muscles, other problems that may have been caused by the pain such as body aches and headaches will also be relieved. Remedial massage can also help treat sports injuries and conditions such as arthritis, frozen shoulder, muscular atrophy, fibrositis and whiplash.

Beyond decreasing pain and providing relief for chronic conditions, remedial massage therapy can support faster recovery times for athletes and people who regularly put their bodies to the test. The targeted massage therapy aids in flushing chemicals from the body that may cause muscles to tighten, breaking down and healing scar tissue after surgical procedures, and assisting lymph fluid draining in patients with cancer or lymphedema. We monitor patients’ healing progress closely to adapt the treatment plan as required and make expert recommendations related to health, lifestyle and behaviour that may be accelerating pain and injuries.
